For many visitors, the start of the year in Da Lat brings one image to mind: roadside cherry trees covered in pink blossom. Some plan their whole trip around the flowers; others happen upon them and remember the sight long afterwards. Learning a little about these trees makes the season even more interesting and helps you choose when to visit.

Known locally as mai anh đào, the tree is commonly identified as Prunus cerasoides, a member of the rose family. Kew Science records its native range from the Indian subcontinent to Indochina, including Vietnam. Its association with temperate climates helps explain why it suits Da Lat’s cool highland setting. One of their loveliest features is the way flowers can cover branches while there are still few leaves. Clusters of pink stand out against the dark wood, making the whole crown seem transformed. You do not need to find an entire hillside of blossom. A single tree beside a house or a quiet stretch of road can make a photograph that feels unmistakably like Da Lat.

Da Lat’s cherry blossom season is generally anticipated from late December through February. This is a useful planning window rather than a promise of the exact peak. In some years, flowers appear earlier; in others, widespread flowering comes in late January or early February. For example, Lam Dong Newspaper reported a later-than-usual season in 2026, with prominent displays in late January and early February. Source: Lam Dong Newspaper
Even within one season, one area may be full of flowers while another is still in bud. Altitude and temperature influence flowering time, and differences between trees also contribute to these staggered displays. Research on Prunus cerasoides has recorded variations in flowering time associated with altitude and flower-colour groups. A beautiful photograph from one location therefore does not mean every part of Da Lat has reached its peak. Source: Nepal Journal of Science and Technology

Before setting off, look for photographs taken close to your travel date and check the particular location you hope to visit. Ask your accommodation or someone nearby whether the trees are still budding, flowering evenly or already putting out leaves. For photographs, try the morning, choose gentle light and step back to include the whole tree. Ask permission before entering a private garden and leave the flowering branches intact for the next visitors.
If your trip also includes ZooDoo, choose a blossom stop that fits your route, then leave time to meet the animals. A comfortable pace makes a spring outing more enjoyable for the whole family. Sometimes the most memorable part is simply stopping together beneath a flowering tree, taking a few photographs and continuing the day.
